Frequently asked questions.
What is online counselling?
Online counselling, also know as Teletherapy, Telehealth, virtual, video or e-counselling, is a form of mental health support provided through digital platforms. It allows individuals to receive counselling remotely via video calls.
How does online counselling work?
Online counselling involves scheduling sessions with a counsellor through a secure and confidential platform (Telehealth). Sessions are conducted through video calls, providing flexibility for clients.
Is online counselling as effective as in-person counselling?
Online counselling offers the same level of professional support and therapeutic interventions as traditional in-person counselling, with the added benefits of accessibility and convenience.
Is online counselling confidential?
We prioritise client confidentiality. We use Telehealth functionality through Power Diary. It uses peer-to-peer connections and is encrypted end-to-end (using DTLS-SRTP). It is compliant with security and privacy requirements in Australia.
What technology is required for online counselling?
Our counselling platform requires a stable internet connection, a device with a camera and microphone and a private space where you can be alone and uninterrupted for the duration of the session. Clients will be emailed a link that you simply click to start the session, no software download required.
What type of issues can be addressed through online counselling?
Online counselling can address a wide range of mental health challenges including anxiety, depression, stress, relationship issues, grief, and more. We use various therapeutic approaches to meet individual needs.
Is this a crisis support service?
No, this is not a crisis support service. If you or someone you know is in a crisis and needs help immediately, call triple zero (000). Lifeline is also available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, on 13 11 14 (call) or 0477 13 11 14 (text).
What if Iām not comfortable with video sessions?
We can discuss your needs in your initial consultation to find the most suitable mode of communication.
Do you have in-person sessions available?
Yes, I am currently seeing clients in-person in Carlton North and Essendon North in Victoria. Availability is limited to certain days and during business hours.
What happens if there are technical issues during a session?
We have contingency plans in place, such as switching to a phone call if necessary. Information sheet will be provided to client prior to first session.
Do I need a mental health care plan?
No mental health care plan is required to use this service.
Is counselling covered by Medicare?
Generally counselling is not covered by Medicare.
What is the difference between a counsellor and a psychologist?
Counsellors focus on providing support, guidance, and therapeutic interventions for individuals dealing with various life issues, stressors, and emotional challenges. Counsellors work with people who are mentally stuck or unwell and facilitate personal growth, coping strategies, and emotional wellbeing. Psychologist are trained to work with mentally illness. They conduct psychological assessments, diagnose mental health disorders and develop treatment plans based on their assessment. This includes using standardised diagnostic tools and tests. It is important for you to consider your needs, and what type of support you require on your wellbeing journey.
